Owen after Peasant (Cezanne’s Peasant)

Last night I went to the Amy Arbus exhibit, After Images, at 1stdibs Gallery located at the New York Design Center. My friend Dina Regine – the multi-talented photographer / musician / DJ – told me they were hosting a book signing event for Arbus’s fifth book, After Images, so we went to check out the exhibit and pick up the book.

Arbus’s new photographs are quite a departure from her previous work. For After Images she hired actors and physically painted them, reinterpreting famous works by artists such as Picasso, Modigliani and Cezanne and then photographed them in chiaroscuro lighting. The effect is stunning and at times, even knowing they are photos of models, they read like painted portraits and demand a closer inspection.

The exhibit is on view until the 29th and I highly recommend seeing it. Amy Arbus will be at the ICP Friday, April 26th from 6:00-7:30PM, signing copies of After Images.
